Glute Exercises: Penn State Volleyball

Training the glutes is critical to improving the explosiveness of your athletes. Regardless of the sport getting the glutes to fire is extremely important. In the video clip below Cameron Davidson,Penn State University Head Volleyball Strength and Conditioning Coach, demonstrates 8 different glute exercises that he utilizes in training the powerful Penn State Womens Volleyball team.

“SmartCore”: Dead Bug and Bridge Series

Every athlete can benefit from a core training program. “SmartCore” is the development and evolution of traditional core training. SmartCore is about controlled mobility of the lumbar spine and pelvis to improve performance an decrease injury risk.
In the clip below Staffan Elgelid,Nazareth College of Rochester Associate Professor of Physical Therapy, demonstrates a series of movements. He demonstrates the “Dead Bug” and Bridge Series.

How to Teach Squat Technique

For those high school or small college coaches that do not have a strength and conditioning coach and are responsible for training your own athletes, the clip below can help you to teach the proper squat technique to your players.

In the video Barry Kagan, former University of Maryland Strength Coach, demonstrates how to teach the proper technique when squating. Metabolic Conditioning Circuits

In the video below Daniel Roose, VCU Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, provides you with examples of exercises that are used in Metabolic Conditioning Circuits. While designed specifically for off-season training of basketball players, this type of workout would be beneficial for all athletes. The workouts progress from 20 seconds of work followed by 40 seconds of rest for the first four weeks. Then for the next four week segment players exercise for 30 seconds with 30 seconds of rest. Then in the four weeks just prior to the start of practice the exercise for 40 seconds with 20 seconds of rest.
